The need for those in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands remains critical

Man rides bike on damaged road in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico

Close on the heels of Hurricane Irma, another, equally powerful hurricane, Maria, followed a similar path across the Caribbean and inflicted additional devastation on many of the same islands. The destruction to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands has been unprecedented and left millions of lives in shambles. Puerto Rico sustained catastrophic damage across the entire island that left water, electricity, roads, and communications networks crippled. Many face days, weeks and months of struggle to secure steady access to basic necessities such as food, water, medicine and fuel in order to begin to rebuild their homes and communities.

Close on the heels of Hurricane Irma, another, equally powerful hurricane, Maria, followed a similar path across the Caribbean. The destruction to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands has been unprecedented and left millions of lives in shambles. Seniors have been driven out of their homes and face current dangers as well as an uncertain future.

Recognizing the immediate and longer-term challenges so many – especially people over age 50 – will face, AARP Foundation has responded with the creation of a disaster relief fund to support the victims devastated by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. To meet their needs, AARP Foundation will match – dollar for dollar – contributions up to a total of $250,000.

In collaboration with the AARP state offices in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, we will direct 100 percent of all funds raised to organizations providing relief and recovery support to disaster victims. Every dollar will make a difference.
